Why Mulch? Benefits of Mulch

Using mulch is a good gardening habit but not mandatory; the benefits, however, make it worth the effort. Mulching is one of the best things you can do for your garden! When mulch is applied to your garden or flower beds it not only enhances the visual appeal of your yard, but it also carries a wide variety of benefits:

  • Mulch is water conserving, it prevents the soil from drying out too quickly, resulting in less water needed in your garden.

  • A good 2-3" layer of mulch naturally helps prevents weeds from sprouting and taking over your garden/flower by blocking it's growth and access to sunlight. Also making it difficult for airborne weeds to take root. You'll find it easier to remove the weeds that do grow.

  • Wood mulches, like what we have here at Jetty's contributes to the health of your soil as it begins to break down.

  • Mulching makes your garden/flower beds look finished, giving a more attractive appearance to your yard.

  • Improves the fertility and health of your soil.

  • Is a great insulator by helping moderate soil temperature fluctuations; keeping soil cool in hot summer days, and warm during the cold winter - protects plants from frost damage.

How to Mulch Properly

Before applying mulch remove weeds and water thoroughly this will help you benefit the most from your new mulch while trying to combat weeds. Lay down a thick-enough layer to discourage new weeds from coming through it - a suggested four-inch layer will discourage weeds.
